The local area guide to living in Manchester
Manchester, the 9th largest city in the United Kingdom, is located in the borough of Greater Manchester, England, in close proximity to both the Pennines and the Peak District. Known globally for its thriving music scene and popular sporting teams, Manchester has emerged as a “must-visit” city in recent years. Progressive and forward-thinking, it has come to define the modern, thriving and sustainable metropolis: outsiders need only look at the countless new developments currently making headway across 2016 - hotels, offices, apartments, entire neighbourhoods - to get a grasp of Manchester’s even bigger future.
Though Manchester retains a reputation as an industrial city due to it having been the world’s first, one could certainly argue that - in terms of history, architecture, infrastructure and hedonistic opportunities of the food, drink and cultural kinds – the city gives the UK’s capital a genuine run for its money. Indeed, in Lonely Planet’s “Top 10 Cities to Visit in 2016” guide, Manchester placed over London and was referred to as both “a dynamo of culture and the arts” and “the UK’s cultural boomtown,” and has been labelled as the UK’s best city to live in by the Global Liveability Survey two years running.
Manchester is also acknowledged for its Nearby Schools
King David Primary School is regarded as the best primary school in the Greater Manchester area according to the Real Schools Guide, with all pupils having achieved at least level 4 in reading, writing and maths. The school has been praised for its “family-like” atmosphere and received an “Outstanding” rating during its most recent Ofsted inspection.
Manchester is home to one of the UK’s largest universities, the University of Manchester, in itself regarded as one of the top 50 universities in the world. 91% of students who attend the University of Manchester go into employment or enrol in further studies within a year of graduating.
Manchester is easily accessible by car, though the city also has an extensive bus network, with over 50 regular services available.
Having been one of the first places in the world to have its own train station, Manchester is well-connected to pretty much everywhere in the United Kingdom via train line: the two main stations are Victoria and Piccadilly, with regular services travelling to and from a large number of cities, including London (with an approximate journey time of two hours).
Manchester also has its own airport, Manchester Airport, making it an easy place to visit by air from across the United Kingdom and Europe. It is located just 8.6 miles away from the city centre in Ringway.
Manchester has a vast selection of shops in its vicinity, catering to all tastes: whether you’re in mood for some mindless browsing or you’re out to find a specific item, the largest Arndale shopping centre in the world is located in Manchester and contains more than 240 individual stores. The Manchester Arndale also happens to be the largest city-centre shopping mall in Europe.
Nicknamed the “cultural corridor” by locals, Oxford Road – also one of the city’s most notable tourist spots - has long served as a proud hub of universities, museums, art galleries and unmissable attractions, but it also makes for a great shopping destination to suit every whim.
